As a group, we envisioned the LUMÉ chair as both a place for relaxation and play. LUMÉ contains a unique ethos that juxtaposes the setting of Dudley courtyard. Intentionally designed to be located in the amphitheater area next to the courtyard, the chair works with the natural environment to create a retreat for the Auburn community to enjoy. When going through the ideation process for this design, the non-negotiable elements that needed to be maintained were its ability to move, the connection of parts as a system, and versatility. The playful element of our chair is created through its ability to be used by two people to rock each other back and forth. In a similar way, when a single person uses the chair, they are in control of the movement and find themselves in a more relaxed and peaceful setting. The pieces of this chair come together to form a crescent shaped design that is reflective of the nature of the chair in both form and purpose.
